Scholar Recognition Ceremony

The GLOBE/Texas Scholars Ceremonies are held each spring to recognize those graduating seniors who have successfully completed the recommended high school program. To honor them, community officials, school board members, administration, and families attend the event. Students enjoy the occasion because they are released from a regular school day, receive commemorative certificates and medallions, interact with seniors from other schools, and may spend Scholars Dollars vouchers at participating area restaurants for lunch with their friends (the cost of which is underwritten by GLOBE and the restaurants). Scholars are also given the opportunity to have their pictures made with a group of friends at no cost. At this same event, GLOBE is pleased to award Teachers of the Year from its area districts. Subsequent to the ceremonies, every GLOBE scholar's name and picture along with those of the Teachers of the Year appear in a special newspaper supplement and on the Longview News-Journal's web site, further enhancing community recognition of the scholars' accomplishments.

The numbers of students participating in GLOBE/Texas Scholars has grown over the years to the point that the event must now be hosted on two days. While it is a major undertaking for the GLOBE/Texas Scholars Board to plan this culminating event that honors over 1,000 students from thirteen area high schools, it is well worth the effort when we see the importance of the event on the students' smiling faces as they cross the stage (and parents' pride as they watch). They value this inclusive recognition for their willingness to take the more challenging course of study, atypical of most honorary designations based only on course grades, rather than difficulty. Without the financial and volunteer support of business and community leaders, the ceremonies would not be possible as an incentive for participation in the Texas Scholars Program. With the broad-based community effort, we enhance the caliber of our local graduates and the quality of life for our community. If you're interested in assisting with the Scholars Ceremonies, you may call the Longview Partnership office at 903/237-4000 or contact Ann Talley or Carol Greer.
